The integration layer is what transforms a language model into a functional agent. Direct API integration

Model Context Protocol (MCP)
MCP, introduced by Anthropic, standardizes how AI agents access tools and data sources. Instead of writing custom integration code for each tool, you connect to MCP servers that expose a standard interface.
How it works: An MCP server wraps an external system (database, API, file system) and exposes its capabilities through a standardized protocol. The server advertises what tools it offers, what parameters they accept, and what resources are available. The AI agent connects to one or more MCP servers and can discover and use their tools without custom integration code for each one.

Native platform integrations

How it works: You configure integrations through a UI or simple configuration file. The platform handles OAuth flows, token refresh, API versioning, and schema changes. Your agent accesses these integrations as pre-built tools without writing any integration code.

Use webhooks for any workflow that should be event-triggered rather than user-triggered. Support tickets, monitoring alerts, and automated scheduling are natural fits.
Fall back to direct API integration for systems with unique requirements, custom authentication, or APIs that no MCP server or native integration covers yet.
The integration layer is not glamorous, but it determines whether your AI agent is a demo or a production system. Invest the time to choose the right patterns upfront, and you will avoid costly rewrites as your agent ecosystem scales.
