AI assistants are on-demand tools: you ask a question, it answers. You request a draft, it writes one. Examples include ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. They're powerful for research, writing, analysis, and brainstorming—but they require you to initiate each interaction and typically don't take actions in external systems.

What is an AI agent?
AI agents work autonomously toward goals. You define the objective (qualify inbound leads, deflect support tickets, monitor security alerts) and the agent runs continuously—processing inputs, making decisions, taking actions, and reporting results. Agents integrate with your tools (CRM, help desk, email) and operate on schedules or triggers without your intervention.

The autonomy spectrum
Most AI products sit on a spectrum. At one end: pure assistants that only respond to direct requests. In the middle: co-pilots that suggest actions within your workflow. At the other end: fully autonomous agents that execute end-to-end. Use an AI assistant for ad-hoc tasks that benefit from human judgment at each step: research, writing, analysis, brainstorming. Use an AI agent for recurring tasks with clear success criteria: lead qualification, ticket deflection, data processing, outbound sequences. The test: if you're doing the same thing every day and the outcome is measurable, it's an agent candidate.
