What is a prompt chain?
A prompt chain (sometimes called a pipeline or workflow) passes output from one LLM call into the next in a predetermined order. For example: step one extracts key points from a document, step two rewrites them as bullet points, step three formats an email. Each step is fixed at build time, making chains easy to debug, test, and version-control. They work best when the task is well-defined and the number of steps is known in advance.

What makes an agent different?
An AI agent adds a reasoning loop: it observes, decides what to do next, calls external tools (search APIs, databases, code interpreters), and repeats until the task is complete. Unlike a chain, the agent's path isn't hardcoded—it adapts based on intermediate results. This flexibility comes at the cost of higher latency, more token usage, and harder debugging, but it unlocks tasks that can't be reduced to a fixed sequence.

When to use which
Use a prompt chain when your task is linear and predictable—content reformatting, summarization pipelines, or structured data extraction. Switch to an agent when the task requires branching logic, real-time tool use (web search, API calls, database queries), or when you can't predict the number of steps in advance. Many teams start with chains and promote to agents only for workflows that genuinely need autonomy, keeping costs and complexity low where possible.
